No one writes like James Baldwin. Reading one of his novels can feel like a poetic, fiery kick in the gut. You know the truth when you read it. His nonfiction is just as powerful in this short book published in the early days of the Civil Rights Movement.

A poignant and unique novel about generational trauma among the women of a Chinese American family. Each woman tells her own story, with each trauma ultimately faced and integrated by one character who lives in 2045. The mix of psychology, science fiction, history and poetry is very satisfying.

A fascinating read that alternates viewpoints between a young Jewish woman in Latvia during WWII and her granddaughter in Chicago in the 1970's. Sarah eventually travels back to Latvia to find out more about her family's history and particularly more about her grandmother, Miriam. (The novel includes graphic and haunting scenes from the Holocaust.)
